WMS PTO NEWSLETTER

Week of 3/18 - 3/22

We send a heartfelt thank you to everyone that participated in the 10th Annual WMS French Fete last Wednesday. We had a blast playing bingo in French, tasting cheese and getting stamps in our “passports”, matching impressionist paintings to French artists, and more. Merci beaucoup to all of the generous volunteers who helped organize and execute this fabulous all-school event.

Some of our WMS students will be attending a Math Meet this Thursday and we wish them “Good Luck”. The Newsies, Jr. opening performance is on Thursday evening at 4:30pm and we cannot wait to watch the show!

All the best,
Your 2023-2024 PTO Presidents
Katie Sullivan & Annie Oh

Friday: Sport Physicals Due

All student-athletes are required to have a current physical examination on file in the Health Office before a student can try-out, practice, or participate in a sport as required by the MIAA guidelines. The Athletic Office and/or individual coaches will not accept physical examination reports sent directly.

To check your student’s physical examination status, please sign into your PowerSchool account, find the SNAP Health Portal, and click on the “Screening” tab. If your student has a current physical examination on file (within the past 13 months) in the nurse’s office and it is NOT due to expire, you do not need to provide another copy. Physical exams are valid for 13 months to the date.

If your student’s physical exam expires during the sports season, your student will no longer be able to participate until a new physical examination has been obtained and is on file in the nurse’s office. Updated physical forms can be uploaded through the SNAP Health Portal.

Questions? Please contact the WMS Nurses' Office.

WMS SAVE THE DATES
Fiorella’s Fundraiser: April 10th

Every little bit counts so we are holding another fundraiser with the help of Fiorella’s on Wednesday, April 10th. Please mark your calendars for Fiorella’s take out on 4/10 for lunch or dinner. Caprese Salad anyone? How about a Honey Hot Chicken Sandwich?

Stay tuned for more information...

Mini Marathon: April 25th

The 17th annual Mini Marathon is on Thursday, April 25th from 9:15-11:15am (with a rain date of Friday, April 26th). The course is 1.64 miles on the sidewalks surrounding the school and there will be 6 heats, 2 per grade level. You may click here to view the route.

Planning is off to a great start! Students received an email this week asking them to provide their t-shirt size. We would like to have all student sizes by the end of the week, so we can place the order in time for the marathon. Any questions, please call the WMS Main Office.

Stay tuned for a volunteer sign-up to sort t-shirts by advisory a few days before the event, and help cheer our students on that morning.

Parent Social: April TBD

This year, we are thinking of bringing back the social for 6th Grade Parents and New Families (cash bar). If this is something that interests you, we are trying to book a local restaurant and wondering how many people might be interested. Please email us at wmsptoinfo@gmail.com if this sounds like something you might attend?

P.S. - If you are a 7th grade or 8th grade parent/guardian and would be interested in meeting more WMS parents, we would love to hear from you too.

PTO ANNOUNCEMENTS
Grade 8 Updates

We want to clarify that 8th Grade students pay $20 each for the Boston Scavenger Hunt. WMS pays for the buses to Boston out of the school’s transportation account and PTO funds are not required. For the 8th Grade Community Service Day, WMS PTO will fund the transportation, and no additional student fees will be requested from the school.

The next meeting about 8th Grade Planning will be Monday, April 8th @7:30pm via Zoom.

The zoom link will be published in the newsletter soon. If you are unable to attend and would like to volunteer, please email 8th Grade co-chair, Sharon-Clarke-Levin at sharon@perfectcurve.com and indicate what you are interested in helping with. We are looking for volunteers to assist with Community Service Day, the 8th Grade Dance, Luncheon/Ice Cream Social, and the Moving Up Ceremony.

To make all these events possible and to fund our class gift to WMS, please make your student’s 8th grade donation of $75 to the WMS PTO PayPal account or mail a check to:

WMS PTO
P.O. Box 81426
Wellesley Hills, MA 02481

Thank you to everyone who has donated to the effort so far!

Grade 7 Author Visit - Book Order

Did your 7th-grade student enjoy our recent visit from graphic novelist Jarrett Kroscozka? Follow this link to purchase an autographed copy of one of Jarrett's books (Lunch Lady, Hey Kiddo, Sunshine) from Jarrett's neighborhood bookstore, High Five Books. The order form will remain open until 3/25.

Random Acts of Kindness

We recently heard through the grapevine that March can seem like a long month. So, how about sending a morale booster? A personal email to a teacher or staff member who helps your child goes a long way. If you are at the grocery store and want to spread a little love, feel free to drop off a little bouquet of flowers, a dozen baked goods, or a bag of snacks. Acts of kindness will be placed in the Faculty Dining Room.

French Fete - THANK YOU!

Merci beaucoup to everyone that attended the French Fête last Wednesday. The planning team is most grateful to all of the parents for volunteering at the activity tables and providing generous food donations. The kids had a great time playing Bingo with French clues, matching impressionist paintings to the correct French artist, playing Twister, Bowling, and getting stamps on their “passports" for tasting different cheeses. All activity tickets were then redeemed for croissants, crepes, and fresh baguettes.

One of the highlights was having our very own Pastry Chef, Lisa Sewall, and her husband Jeremy demonstrate how to make fresh crepes. It was a wonderful celebration of all things French and we couldn’t be more grateful for our dedicated WMS community of caregivers. If you would like to see more pictures, click this link to the Swellesley Report here.

Memorial Day Assembly Speakers

We are looking for an engaging speaker at the annual Memorial Day assembly for students. If you know a local veteran who might like to speak and share their story, please reach out to us at wmsptoinfo@gmail.com.

Yearbook Orders: Due April 5th

Don’t forget to order your WMS yearbook at CoffeePond.com. Go to “Order Online” and “Yearbooks”, then enter the password “Raiders”. Yearbooks are $33 and the final day to order is April 5th.

Composting Helpers: Sign Up Here

Calling All Parents/Guardians: We are looking for a volunteer during 6th grade lunch (11:20am-12:00pm) to stand by the composting station and help kids dispose of their trash properly. We are finding that having a parent stand by the bins increases compliance. This is the last time that we will be posting the sign up.

Our diligent composting club students help out if something lands in the wrong bin by using some super cool grabbers, and the PTO just provided a fresh set. Help us stay green at WMS and check out the SIGN UP HERE!

Sign in at the front office and Mr. Rabinowitz will meet you to show you around. Please check with Patty Chong in the main office to make sure you have a CORI form on file.

Grade 6: Reading Rally

Update: Ms. Kenerson is under the weather and we’ll be pushing this back a week until she’s back with us at WMS. Get well soon Julie!

We are excited to share that the Grade 6 Reading Rally is happening once again. This year we are donating to Off the Rocks Rescue, a local cat rescue. Participating 6th graders will call relatives, friends and anyone else who would like to sponsor them. The sponsors can donate per book, per page or with a flat donation.

For two weeks, March 25th to April 8th, participants will read as much as they can. At the end of the two weeks of the Reading Rally, participants will collect their donations, and there will be a pizza and dessert party for everyone who took part.

Off the Rocks Rescue flies cats here from Saint Thomas, USVI because in 2021 there was a major hurricane that left the island in ruin. Since it is a small local shelter, donations will make a huge difference.

We will introduce the Reading Rally to all 6th graders next week and distribute all the information they will need to participate. Please encourage your 6th grader to take part in the Reading Rally. We hope all 6th graders will participate!

Thank you,
Advisory 323

WHS Robotics Team

The WPS community is cordially invited to watch the Wellesley High School Robotics Team compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) as Team Ultraviolet #8567 on March 23rd and 24th. This competition is the culmination of months of work put into building their robot, and it is an exciting event for all ages, especially kids who are interested in STEM. It’s a preview of the enormous fun they can expect with high school’s STEM programs.

NE District Greater Boston Event 2024
When: Saturday, March 23rd & Sunday, March 24th
Where: Revere High School (101 School St) Revere, MA

Details: There are 38 teams competing at this event. It's free and open to the public to watch. The qualification matches will start at 11am and run all through the day till 7pm on Saturday March 23rd. On Sunday March 24th, there will be additional qualification matches in the morning (10am-12pm), and playoffs and award ceremonies in the afternoon(1pm-4pm).

FIRST Robotics Competition is the ultimate sport for the mind. Under strict rules and limited time and resources, teams of high school students are challenged to build industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game in alliance with other teams, while also fundraising to meet their goals, designing a team “brand,” and advancing respect and appreciation for STEM within the local community.

Wellesley A Better Chance is Seeking Volunteers!

For more than 50 years, Wellesley ABC has provided academically talented and promising young women of color A Better Chance of educational preparedness through enrollment at Wellesley High School. ABC scholars live in a family-style home with tutoring, meals, medical and social/emotional support. The program cannot function without an army of volunteers; we need your help!

Volunteer roles range in time commitment and involvement; there is something for everyone. We are currently seeking both board and non-board positions, including a treasurer, drivers, and more.

Please email office@wellesleyabc.org for more information about how to get involved with this great and fun organization!

“I’m grateful for what my Wellesley A Better Chance experience offered me… a chance to grow, to learn, and to become the person I am today.” – a 1988 Wellesley ABC alumna
